Yakelos Mechouia Salad – A Grilled Tunisian Classic

A Spicy Alternative to the Greek Salad

Popular in the Mediterranean, salads are refreshing and easy to prepare. In Tunisia, mechouia salad – from salata mashwiya, meaning "grilled salad" – is a staple. Often served as a starter, it’s also perfect as a light meal or with drinks. Compared to its Greek counterpart, mechouia has a bit more spice, thanks to bold Tunisian flavors like harissa.

Ingredients

Use whatever fresh vegetables you have on hand:

Preparation

1. Grill the vegetables
Preheat the oven to 200 °C (390 °F). Place the vegetables on a tray and roast until cooked but still slightly firm (al dente).

2. Blend into a chunky salad
Let the vegetables cool slightly, peel the peppers if desired, then crush or blend into a coarse paste.

3. Season
Add ras el hanout and a bit of harissa to taste. Mix in a generous splash of extra virgin olive oil.

4. Garnish and serve
Top with boiled eggs, tuna, or feta, and sprinkle with chopped parsley or coriander.

Serving Tip

Great warm or at room temperature. Serve with bread as a light lunch or as a dip at gatherings.
