After a night out, many people crave a shawarma sandwich. In other countries, this term doesn't exist, and people refer to it as a döner kebab. The curious reader has of course been wondering for a long time what the difference is between these two dishes. Well, exploring the meaning immediately clarifies a lot.

Shawarma originally came from the Ottoman Turkish word çevirme meaning 'something that is turned or rotated'. Döner kebab is a combination of the Ottoman Turkish words döner ('to rotate') and kebâp ('roasted meat'). In your imagination, you can immediately see the lamb meat rotating on the vertical spit in both cases.
For clarity: The Ottoman Empire was the Turkish empire that ruled over a large part of Southeast Europe, Western Asia and North Africa between the 14th and early 20th century. Almost nothing remains of that power.
But whatever you call the dish, it needs a fresh salad with it (or in it). Often, you find that nowadays that salad consists of nothing more than a few strands of iceberg lettuce, but in Turkey, much more care is given to salads with their meals. They provide the much-needed refreshment in the often dry and arid climate.
One of them is the delicious Turkish red cabbage salad and it's simple for any enthusiast to prepare.
The red cabbage is cut into fine strips and then marinated in a very simple dressing of olive oil, lemon juice, and salt. The cabbage absorbs all the flavors of the dressing, and its texture becomes softer over time, making the salad even more delicious.
This simple salad, added to your favorite meat dishes, provides a delicious crunchy and fresh accent.
Ingredients
- one red cabbage, thinly sliced or shredded
